Announcing the Teenreads.com Ultimate Reading List and Celebrating Teen Read Week!
|
|
This week (October 15th-21st) is Teen Read Week and Teenreads.com is proudly one of the sponsors of this event. We want you to join us in getting the word out about Teen Read Week to your friends, teachers and librarians. As part of this week's celebration, you can go here and vote for your favorite book of the year.
Join thousands of teens across the country who will be reading for the fun of it as schools, libraries and bookstores celebrate this year's theme, "Get Active @ your library®."
During Teen Read Week you can also vote for your favorite new books as part of the Teens' Top Ten List, or help choose next year's theme by voting online. Want your library and school to get involved, if they don't know about Teen Read Week? Then send them this link.
One of our goals each month is to inspire you to read --- and to keep reading. We have found that required reading lists for school --- especially summer reading lists --- are not exactly inspiring. Thus we have created what we think is the Ultimate Teen Reading List --- 250 titles that we think are perfect choices for reading and discussing. Our dream is that schools will use this list to help them make their own for summer reading, or even better, suggest that students just read what they want from this list.
How did we create our list? We compiled entries from Teenreads.com readers who weighed in with their selections and we also asked our staffers for suggestions. Titles range from young adult books to books that we read on adult lists that we think would be enjoyed by teens.
Thanks to all who participated in this project, which spurred a lot of conversation about books. We encourage you to share this list with your teachers and fellow classmates, as well as librarians. Over the next few months, we also will be sharing ideas on how these books can be explored once you return to school. Here are our first two ideas, both of which involve book discussion:
Ideas for Discussing These Books:
1) Have the entire school read one book for summer reading and set aside time the first week of school for students to discuss it. Mix up the student body and place people into small groups. That way people can review a title and, yes, get to know each other better. Many colleges have been doing this as an ice breaker for freshmen, and we think it's a great idea.
2) Start a Book Club at your high school based on summer reading. Many of these titles can provoke interesting --- and spirited --- conversations. Maybe add Book Club to your current list of clubs at school. Keep in mind here that the goal is to have fun reading.
and we are happy to tell you that TOKYOPOP's POP Fiction titles, which we have been sharing advance information with you about all summer, are now in stores.
Lots of great reading this month on Teenreads.com, including a chance to win 12 copies of SOMETHING REMAINS for your book group, the opportunity to tell us what YOU think of SOLD --- a National Book Award Finalist for Young People's Literature --- and we are happy to share that TOKYOPOP's POP Fiction titles, which we have been sharing advance information with you about all summer, are now in stores.
Read on and Happy Teen Read Week to all of you!
