Winding Down

Depending upon where you are in the country --- and what your school schedule is --- this month either signals the winddown or the last month of academic craziness. The last 30 days of school are filled with papers, reports, exams and also a flurry of extracurricular things like school plays, recitals and sports.

It's a wonder you can keep it all juggled and organized!

When your vaca starts think about organizing one last list before you kick back. Create a summer reading list for yourself. Pull together a list of 10-12 titles that you want to read. Maybe some will be required summer reading, but we hope that you will explore some other books and authors as well.

If you give some thought to what you want to read now, when the summer days get hazy and lazy you will have a plan.

We have more than a few suggestions this month to get you started.

Good luck with your last days of school...and happy reading.

Have a great month....

2004 Claudia Seaman Poetry Contest
http://teenreads.pmail.biz/pmailweb/ct?id=94+0+93+1+11773
The Claudia Ann Seaman Poetry Award is open to all high school students across the country. Each young writer may submit two poems on any subject and in any form as long as their submission does not exceed 10 pages in length. The deadline for entering this annual contest is June 1, 2004.

The award was established in 1983 in Poughkeepsie, New York, by the Seaman family in honor of their daughter and sister, Claudia, a young poet. With the help of the Community Foundation of Dutchess County and the Teenreads.com website, the award, a national competition open to all students in grades 9 through 12, is held each year to encourage, support, and promote young writers. With a $500 cash prize and publication of the winning poem in the literary journal HANGING LOOSE, it is hoped that the Claudia Ann Seaman Poetry Award will help keep interest in reading and writing poetry alive and well at the high school level. We hope that English and writing teachers and librarians and other mentors working with young people will use the award as an incentive and as evidence of the viability of a literary life.
