As 2006 comes to a close, we at Teenreads.com have compiled some of our favorite books of the year for teens. Along with THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PAJAMAS by John Boyne and THE BOOK THIEF by Markus Zusak --- two stunning and gripping novels set against the backdrop of the Holocaust during World War II --- we spotlight SOLD by Patricia McCormick, a searing portrait of a young girl forced into prostitution, and CATHY'S BOOK, a unique story that is unlike anything you've ever read.

This year James Patterson continued his Maximum Ride fantasy/adventure series with SCHOOL'S OUT - FOREVER, Stephenie Meyer hit the bestseller lists again with NEW MOON, her sequel to TWILIGHT, and Louis Sachar returned with SMALL STEPS, the long-awaited follow-up to his 1998 blockbuster HOLES. Other series updates in 2006 included The Princess Diaries, Gossip Girl, The Clique, The Gatekeepers, Annals of the Western Shore (a companion to Ursula K. Le Guin's GIFTS), Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels featuring Tiffany Aching and the Wee Free Men, and the Uglies trilogy by Scott Westerfeld.

We also revisit the series titles that made their debuts in 2006. Among them are TERRIER by Tamora Pierce, a new Tortall trilogy introducing an amazing young woman named Beka Cooper; THE LOOKING GLASS WARS, the first installment of an ALICE IN WONDERLAND-based trilogy from Frank Beddor; KIKI STRIKE: INSIDE THE SHADOW CITY by Kirsten Miller; and M.T. Anderson's THE ASTONISHING LIFE OF OCTAVIAN NOTHING, TRAITOR TO THE NATION, winner of this year's National Book Award in the young adult category.

Additional standouts in 2006 include WHAT HAPPENED TO CASS McBRIDE?, a psychological thriller from Gail Giles that literally will leave readers gasping for air; A BRIEF CHAPTER IN MY IMPOSSIBLE LIFE, Dana Reinhardt's moving first novel about a high school student whose life is turned upside down after receiving an important phone call; and CHEW ON THIS, a compulsively readable young adult version of FAST FOOD NATION by Eric Schlosser.

We hope you enjoy our year-end feature and make new discoveries along the way, as you look forward to what lies ahead in 2007.

Drawing on her rich imagination, two-time Newbery winner Lois Lowry confronts these questions and explores the conflicts between the gentle bits and pieces of the past that come to life in dream, and the darker horrors that find their form in nightmare. In a haunting story that tiptoes between reality and imagination, two people --- a lonely, sensitive woman and a damaged, angry boy --- face their own histories and discover what they can be to one another.

They humiliate him and exclude him from sports events and celebrations. Most painfully, his best friend, Kurt, shuns him entirely. And they believe the Oracle House, where the last few undestroyed books are hidden, is seething with demons. To 17-year-old Memer, however, the house is a refuge, a place of family and learning, ritual and memory.
