Now, in high school, I'm taking advanced English classes and once I pick up a good book I rarely put it down until I've read it from cover to cover.

Then one day, my dad gave me a book he'd found on one of his trips that he thought I'd enjoy, and it was Ruby in the Smoke. After I read it, Philip Pullman became my favorite author.

All of them are really great and my teacher also was really great!

Most of the time, the books teachers assigned us in class were horrible, boring, stupid, and utterly picked apart by those quaint class discussions. Then in sixth grade, things started getting better. Even though --- or maybe because --- I'd already read every single book we read that year, I realized that it wasn't the books that were horrible, just the way that teacher controlled our thoughts about them. In seventh grade, our teacher had us read 1984. I can't say I loved it or enjoyed it, but I felt it. Even today the thought of a doomed future haunts my mind.
